What is MD5 Hash Generator?
An MD5 hash generator computes the 128-bit MD5 digest of any text or file. MD5 maps arbitrary input to a fixed-length fingerprint: identical input always yields the identical hash, and even a one-character change produces a completely different digest.
MD5 is no longer secure against deliberate collision attacks, so it should not protect passwords or signatures — but it remains in daily use for checksums of downloads, cache keys, legacy system integrations and quick file-deduplication checks. The hash is computed locally, so sensitive files never leave your device.
How to use it
- 1Type or paste text, or drop a file onto the page.
- 2The MD5 digest appears immediately as a 32-character hex string.
- 3Compare it against a published checksum to verify a download.
- 4Copy the hash for use in your workflow or system.
Common use cases
- Verifying an ISO or package download against its published MD5 checksum.
- Generating cache keys or deduplication fingerprints for files and strings.
- Meeting a legacy API's MD5-based signature or identifier requirement.
Frequently asked questions
▸Is MD5 still safe to use?
Not for security purposes: collisions can be crafted, so never use it for passwords or signatures. For checksums and cache keys where attackers are not crafting inputs, it remains practical.
▸What about SHA-256 instead?
Use SHA-256 whenever you control the choice — it is the modern standard and just as easy to compute; MD5 is here for compatibility with systems that require it.
