What is SQL Formatter?
SQL written under deadline tends to end up as one 2,000-character line. A formatter reprints it with clauses on their own lines, keywords capitalized, indentation matching nesting depth and commas aligned — the difference between a query you can debug and one you scroll sideways through.
This formatter understands the common dialects (MySQL, PostgreSQL, T-SQL, SQLite, standard SQL) so dialect-specific keywords and functions format correctly. Everything runs locally, which matters because real queries embed table names, business logic and sometimes confidential data.
How to use it
- 1Paste your SQL query into the editor.
- 2Pick the dialect and preferences (keyword case, indent width).
- 3Click Format — the structured query replaces the input.
- 4Copy the formatted SQL back into your code, migration or documentation.
Common use cases
- Reviewing a colleague's or an ORM-generated query in a pull request.
- Documenting a reporting query so the team can actually read it.
- Standardizing query style across a codebase before a review cycle.
Frequently asked questions
▸Will formatting change how my query runs?
No. Formatting only alters whitespace and capitalization (when you choose the keyword-case option). Semantics, aliases and execution results are untouched.
▸Does it support stored procedures and CTEs?
Yes — WITH clauses and nested subqueries indent correctly. Extremely long procedural blocks (full stored procedures) format best statement by statement.
