What is Base64 Encoder & Decoder?
Base64 is an encoding scheme that represents binary data using 64 printable ASCII characters (A–Z, a–z, 0–9, + and /). It is not encryption — anyone can decode it — but it makes binary data safe to travel through text-only channels such as JSON, XML, URLs, HTML data attributes and email.
This tool supports both directions: paste text to get Base64, or paste Base64 to recover the original text. It handles full Unicode (Chinese, emoji, accents) correctly, which many quick converters get wrong by treating characters as single bytes.
How to use it
- 1Switch between the Encode and Decode tabs depending on your goal.
- 2Paste your text (or Base64 string) into the input area.
- 3The conversion runs instantly — check the output panel for the result.
- 4Copy the result with one click; errors are reported if the Base64 is malformed.
Common use cases
- Embedding a small image as a data URI inside CSS or HTML to save an HTTP request.
- Encoding credentials for an HTTP Basic Authentication header.
- Decoding a Base64 payload from a JWT or an API log to see what it contains.
Frequently asked questions
▸Is Base64 encryption?
No. Base64 is an encoding, not encryption. It provides zero security — anyone can decode it. Use it for transport compatibility, never for protecting secrets.
▸Why does the encoded string end with = signs?
The = character is padding that makes the output length a multiple of 4. One or two padding characters appear depending on how many bytes the input has.
